How did we come to the exciting precipice we are on? Here’s a brief history of UAP:

In 2013, United Academics of Philadelphia began as an ambitious and innovative experiment that sought to address the corporatization of higher education by organizing faculty based on geography and the logic of the academic job market.  UAP emerged as a combative force--an organization that would serve both to improve working conditions at individual universities in the Philadelphia metro-region, and provide resources and community for faculty throughout the city.

Over the past 5 years, we have worked diligently with many of you to achieve both of these goals! We organized adjunct faculty at Temple University with TAUP; we supported the Faculty & Staff Federation of the Community College of Philadelphia as they leveraged the power of their workers to win contracts; we organized a union for adjunct faculty at Arcadia University and successfully negotiated a contract with yearly increases for every adjunct, improved access to healthcare, and more meaningful job security!

Throughout this process, we’ve also continued to build our community and provide support for members across the city who are teaching at universities where UAP does not (yet) have a formal presence by leading Student Debt Clinics & Unemployment Workshops, hosting networking barbeques & happy hours, and providing trainings on how to organize your colleagues.

But all this is just the beginning! We still have schools to organize, new contracts to win, and existing ones to improve upon.  In fact, UAP will continue to grow until every school in the Philadelphia metro-region offers ALL of its faculty a higher-than-living wage, generous benefits packages, meaningful job security AND until the city replaces its Frank Rizzo statue with one of Paul Dannenfelser. :)

What now?We are at a significant moment in UAP history.  With the ratification of the Arcadia University contract, we are now able to ratify our union’s constitution and officially charter as a Local of AFT!

In the coming weeks, we will share a draft of the constitution with all members and hold an information session where we can review, discuss, and debate its contents.  We will then hold an in-person ratification vote which will lead directly into a chartering party.

Please plan to attend these events to be part of this historic process:
